"Chiropractic is for older people with back pain" is what I hear from many people. Did you know that the first "Chiropractic Adjustment" actually helped a person hear again? At the end of this blog I will let you know what to google to find out more. With that being said, Chiropractic Adjustments, while doing much to relieve back pain, does much more that this. The chiropractic adjustment specifically removes subluxations or fixations in the spine to relieve pressure at the joint from which the spinal nerves exit the spine. This in turn can remove pressure on the whole joint complex allowing not only the muscles to relax, but can have a profound effect on anything that those irritated or "pinched" nerves may go to. You see, nerves don't just go to the muscles of the back, they branch out from the spine and reach all the way out to every organ and tissue in the body. So while your back feels better from the adjustment, so may you liver, kidneys, toes, etc.
O.K., let me get back on track. Since most kids don't come and see me for low back pain, parents do bring them in for colic, ear infections, and yes even back pain. Do I treat ear infections and colic? Of course not. I treat the spine and the nerves that exit the spine. When irritation is removed from that area many times other "symptoms" get better. Some parents bring their babies in just to get checked after birth. "Why on earth would you bring a baby in to a chiropractor", you may ask. Being born causes a lot of stress on the baby. Even "easy" births can cause a lot of stress on the baby.
Abraham Tobin, MD, Ph.D., a pathologist, in Harvard University did some research on birth trauma and came to some interesting conclusions about the effects of being born.
"... severe spinal stress occurs, as in the case of most of us, a child can linger for many years before malfunction and disease occur and death results at an early age. How ever if the damage is in the form of the usual spinal stress we can exist for a number of years apparently well but with so called "take it for granted" problems... The real cause of our demise is not the disease, nor the drugs or surgeries, but the spinal stress that happened at birth. This is what robs us of our innate potential for a long, healthy life."

10 reasons parents take their children to see a chiropractor:
1) To encourage good neural plasticity (brain and nerve development).
2) To support their child’s overall health and wellbeing.
3) To help strengthen their child’s immunity and potentially reduce the incidence of colds, ear-aches and general illness.
4) To assist with colic and Irritable Baby Syndrome.
5) To help with asthma, breathing difficulties and allergies.
6) To encourage good spinal posture.
7) To help improve their child’s ability to concentrate.
8) To assist with behavioral disorders.
9) To help alleviate digestive problems.
10) To assist with bed-wetting and sleep issues.
I urge you to explore all possibilities you have to strengthen your child’s health.
Finally, and most importantly for most parents. Is Chiropractic safe for kids and babies?
In a literature research study conducted by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) the risk of injury as a result of chiropractic adjustments was shown to be extremely low for adults and even smaller for the pediatric patient. In reviewing 31 years of medical literature the ICPA found only one questionable report of injury to a child following chiropractic care of a child. This ICPA concluded "the potential risk to children is so low it can not be accurately estimated". The above safety rate of chiropractic care for children should be compared to the adverse reaction rate for medicine.
To take just one example:
Adverse reactions to antibiotics send more than 140,000 Americans to the emergency room every year, according to a study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and reported this month by Natural News.
While antibiotics have saved countless of lives, overuse for conditions they do not treat has also risen.
According to Dr. Daniel S. Budnitz, the leader of the study, “Antibiotics are among the most frequently used medications in the United States. Annually, antibiotics are prescribed to an estimated 16 percent of patients during ambulatory care visits, and pharmaceutical manufacturers spend $1 billion promoting antibiotics.” The report continues, “more than one-half of the estimated 100 million antibiotic prescriptions written in the community each year for respiratory tract infections may be unnecessary.”
So when you are looking for care for your children, at least consider chiropractic care. It is a safe AND effective alternative to drug therapy and a competent chiropractor will know when to recommend your child see his or her medical doctor. The opposite may not be true.
