Most people are under the impression that chiropractic is for the treatment of back pain and neck pain, but the truth is that the purpose of chiropractic is to enhance the functional capabilities of the entire body.
So how does this relate to preconception, pregnancy and pediatrics?
There are a staggering number of couples that are currently having difficulty trying to conceive and some of them are turning to conventional medicine for answers. This problem is met with costly procedures that are not guaranteed to be successful. Some couples are spending amounts in the six figure range with unsuccessful results. In terms of the nervous system, the reproductive organs are supplied with necessary information from the brain via the spinal cord and the spinal nerves. A misalignment of the spine (subluxation) can cause a decrease in nerve transmission to and from the reproductive organs. This can lead to decreased function of the organs responsible for reproduction and possible inability to conceive.
Through chiropractic care, the spine is realigned and interference is removed from the nervous system to allow the body to function properly and at its highest capacity. The reproductive organs are able to function, unhindered, with full communication to and from the brain and thus conception becomes possible.
During the stages of pregnancy, the body undergoes overwhelming dynamic changes that can affect the health of the mother and growing baby. Significant postural changes occur that can cause discomfort to mom which will cause a release of stress hormones that negatively impact the mother’s physiology as well as alter the natural development of the fetus. The energy that is normally used for everyday biological processes (reproduction, digestion, metabolism, thinking, etc.) is diverted to deal with the negative effects of pain and discomfort. Chiropractic adjustments help to relieve the discomfort that can arise during pregnancy.
A specific chiropractic adjusting technique is utilized during pregnancy, known as the Webster Technique. This technique specifically focuses on proper alignment of the pelvis to optimize space for baby to grow as well as enhance neurological communication between mother and baby. With optimal space and 100% communication between mother and her developing fetus, baby is able to develop to its fullest potential. Utilizing chiropractic care throughout pregnancy has shown to decrease mean labor time as well as reduce the risk of medical intervention.
Without adequate space to grow in the womb, a developing fetus can experience something known as intrauterine constraint. This introduces the first opportunity for subluxation which can drastically affect spinal health throughout a person’s lifetime if left undetected and untreated. The birthing process can be very traumatic to a newborn and their delicate spine. Conventional birthing practices lend to issues affecting the alignment of a baby’s spinal column and subsequently affecting the health of the spinal cord and nervous system entirely. This is why it is imperative that a newborn be checked for subluxations that may hinder development or lead to future health issues.
When a subluxation develops in the spine, the body will adapt over time and the misaligned vertebrae and dysfunctional nervous system output will become the new “normal.” These adaptations over time increase the likelihood for early degenerative changes as well as decreased nerve transmission, dysfunction and dis-ease. Chiropractic adjustments for newborns, infants and toddlers realign the spine to remove any interference to the nervous system to allow the brain and body to properly communicate for optimal healing and development. In order for a child’s brain to fully develop and create neuronal pathways, proper nutrition is necessary as well as unobstructed spinal mobility. Proper movement of the spine allows neurologic information to flood the brain which in turn feeds the child’s developing brain.
Chiropractic has shown to help children with issues such as colic, ear infections, frequent illness, respiratory issues, digestive problems, latching/breastfeeding issues, developmental delay, autism and ADD/ADHD just to name a few. Children that are under regular chiropractic care tend to do better in school and in sports and get ill less frequently compared to children that are not under chiropractic care.
It is important that we all understand that the benefits of chiropractic care go far beyond relieving neck and back pain. A healthy spine and nervous system are essential for every bodily function, optimal growth, development and overall health and wellness. Maintain good spinal hygiene with regular chiropractic care for you and your entire family!
